Knowledge organiser Term 5 and 6 2025-

Use the link above to find out about the key knowledge that children will be learning about during terms 5 and 6. It also contains useful vocabulary that you may wish to discuss with your children.

Maths

Our maths for term 5 and 6 include finishing off our unit of factors, multiples and primes before moving on to our fractions unit. Within this we will cover equivalent fractions, fraction-decimal equivalents, unit and non-unit fractions, multiplying fractions and problem solving with fractions. We will then finish off term 6 looking at converting units (metric/ imperial) and angles (acute/ obtuse/ reflex and measuring).

English

The children will be developing their reading comprehension skills as well as improving their vocabulary through our new class text ‘Riddles of the Runes by Janina Kamirez. The book is a mystery and investigation genre intertwined with historical fiction. The main themes of the book are courage, truth, teamwork, family, hope and exploration of the Viking community. It ties in perfectly with our learning enquiry.

In writing, the class will develop further all of the skills needed to be a Year 5 writer. We will base all writing skills required on two books. The first book is The Paper Son by Julie Leung which is an inspirational story based on the real life of Tyrus Wong, who was an immigrant and artist. He was the man behind the artwork of Bambi but was never given the recognition. The second book is Varmints by Helen Ward which is an award winning picture book. It links well to the concepts of invasion and settlement which we will be learning about in our learning enquiry.

Religious Education

In term 5 and 6 we will focus on Judaism. Within this we will be covering community, Jewish beliefs, Shabbat, Bar Mitzvah, Moses, Worship and Passover.

Science

During terms 5 and 6, the class will build upon their existing knowledge about materials and their properties and consider ‘Why do materials change?’. Within this unit, we will learn about and investigate dissolving, separating, changes that are reversible and irreversible, Mohs scale of hardness, electrical and thermal materials and magnetism.

History

In terms 5 and 6, our historical focus will be on the Vikings and invasion. We will find out more about who they are and what they have to do with invasion. We will also look in more detail at the Lindisfarne invasion and study Viking boats in more detail.

Geography

Again our geographical focus will be linked with our learning about the Vikings. We will consider why and where the Vikings invaded, looking closely at Lindisfarne and how this has changed over time. We will also complete map work and locate places of significance from the Viking era.

Music

This term, both sites will be taking part in Samba lessons led by West of England Music and Arts. We know this is something they will really enjoy. We will spend some time listening, learning and singing Blues style music.

Computing

In term 5 we will be using the Kapow unit ‘Creating Media: Stop Motion’ where we will create our own stop motion videos. In term 6 we will be using the Kapow unit ‘Programming: Micro Bits’ where we will be looking at different coding structures, planning and making our own programs.

DT

Term 6 -We will be learning about structure via bridges.  The children will learn how to reinforce a structure to increase its strength. They will build a spaghetti truss bridge then design, build, reinforce and evaluate their own truss bridge.

ART

This term we will be learning about 3d sculpture which opens the children’s eyes to ask the question ‘What is art?’. They will compare features of art installations and investigate space and scale when creating 3d art. They will plan their own art installation that communicates an idea.

PE

In term 5 we will be focussing on athletics and static balance. In term 6, we will be focussing on health-related exercises and tennis.

PSHE

We now use KAPOW for our PSHE lessons.

In term 5 our focus is on Citizenship. The children will:

  • Understand what happens when someone breaks the law.
  • Understand what rights are and that freedom of expression is one of these rights.
  • Understand how reducing the use of materials and energy helps the environment, and what individuals can do to support this.
  • Understand how people contribute to society and how this is recognised.
  • Understand the role of pressure groups.
