Terms 5 and 6
Welcome back! We hope you all had a restful Easter break. This summer term is filled with lots of exciting events so keep your eye on the newsletter for dates.
Sports Day

LEARNING ENQUIRY : Why do people invade and settle?
This learning theme has history and geography as the main focus with interesting concepts being addressed such as invasion, wealth and economy.
We will be covering the following questions during our enquiry:
- What is invasion?
- Why do people invade?
- Why did the Vikings travel?
- Why did the Vikings trade?
- How did invasion change Britain?
Maths
Our maths for term 5 and 6 include finishing off our unit of factors, multiples and primes before moving on to our fractions unit. Within this we will cover equivalent fractions, fraction-decimal equivalents, unit and non-unit fractions, multiplying fractions and problem solving with fractions. We will then finish off term 6 looking at converting units (metric/ imperial) and angles (acute/ obtuse/ reflex and measuring).
English
The children will be developing their reading comprehension skills as well as improving their vocabulary through our new class text ‘Riddles of the Runes by Janina Kamirez. The book is a mystery and investigation genre intertwined with historical fiction. The main themes of the book are courage, truth, teamwork, family, hope and exploration of the Viking community. It ties in perfectly with our learning enquiry.
In writing, the class will develop further all of the skills needed to understand and write the following:
- Poetry – based on Conker
- Persuade – advert for a holiday brochure in Scandinavia
- Entertain – portal story
- Inform – fact file linked with Norse Gods
- Narrative – legend based on Beowulf
Religious Education
In term 5 and 6 we will focus on Judaism. Within this we will be covering community, Jewish beliefs, Shabbat, Bar Mitzvah, Moses, Worship and Passover.
Science
During terms 5 and 6, the class will build upon their existing knowledge about materials and their properties and consider ‘Why do materials change?’. Within this unit, we will learn about and investigate dissolving, separating, changes that are reversible and irreversible, Mohs scale of hardness, electrical and thermal materials and magnetism.
History
In terms 5 and 6, our historical focus will be on the Vikings and invasion. We will find out more about who they are and what they have to do with invasion. We will also look in more detail at the Lindisfarne invasion and study Viking boats in more detail.
Geography
Again our geographical focus will be linked with our learning about the Vikings. We will consider why and where the Vikings invaded, looking closely at Lindisfarne and how this has changed over time. We will also complete map work and locate places of significance from the Viking era.
Music
This term, both sites will be taking part in Samba lessons led by West of England Music and Arts. We know this is something they will really enjoy. We will spend some time listening, learning and singing Blues style music.
Computing
In term 5 we will be using the Kapow unit ‘Creating Media: Stop Motion’ where we will create our own stop motion videos. In term 6 we will be using the Kapow unit ‘Programming: Micro Bits’ where we will be looking at different coding structures, planning and making our own programs.
DT
This term we will be designing and making our own scaled down versions of Viking longboats
Art
This term we will be focussing on self-portraits.
PE
In term 5 we will be focussing on athletics and static balance. In term 6, we will be focussing on health-related exercises and tennis.
PSHE
We will continue to use Jigsaw for our PSHE lessons. In term 5 our focus is on ‘Relationships: recognising me’ and we will be looking at this in terms of online community, gaming and staying safe online. In term 6 our focus is ‘Changing me: self-image and body-image’. We will cover puberty in boys and girls, conception and looking ahead to the future.
