This term our enquiry will be ‘How did the Nile help Ancient Egyptians survive and thrive?’
Over the next two terms we will be leaning how the Ancient Egyptians used the river Nile to survive and thrive. Learning about Ancient Egyptians farming techniques, how they communicated and how they built amazing structures like the pyramids.
English
In English, we will be reading the text ‘The boy who grew dragons’ by Andy Shepherd. Year 3 have loved this story so far and can’t wait to see what happens when a boy discovers he can grow real dragons.
In our writing lessons, we be leaning to write a fairy tale using the text ‘The Egyptian Cinderella’. We will explore how to write creatively modelling our story on fairy tale Cinderella. One of our units focuses on poetry using the text ‘Walking with my Iguana’.
Maths
We will begin by continuing our unit on fractions where we be finding equivalent fractions, learning how to read and write fractions (including tenths) and how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator. adding and subtracting them in problem solving situations. After we will move on to measure-length including millimetres, centimetres and metres. We will introduce the children to perimeter.
Science
In Science, we are learning about plants. We will look closely at the part of the plant, life cycle of flowing plants and the requirements of plants for life and growth.
RE
Our RE Unit for this term is ‘Why are some journeys and places special?’. We will be exploring the different journeys that the children experience in their lives and how Christians celebrate their journey through life. Our values this term are Service and Truthfulness.
Music
In Music, we will be continuing to learn how to play the ukulele as we explore how to move from one chord to another in order to play simple tunes. We are also learning songs as part of North Somerset Music Service’s ‘Raise the Roof’ celebration and are looking forward to sharing these at the end of term.
PE
We are continuing with our swimming lessons and are working towards achieving some key milestones by the end of term. For our school based PE sessions we will be working on our dance skills using Real PE’s dance units. We will also be working on the creative cog- recognising similarities and differences in movements and expression.
PSHE
Our Jigsaw unit this term is ‘Healthy Me’. As part of this unit we will be finding out how to keep our bodies healthy and how to keep ourselves safe.
Term Four Monday 20th February– Friday 31st March 2023

This term our enquiry will be ‘How did people start to settle?’
We will continue to explore what life was like in the Stone Age, learning how life changed in the Neolithic period as Stone Age people moved from being nomadic hunter-gatherers to settling into farming based communities. As geographers, we will explore the sites of Skara Brae and Cheddar and decide which we would have chosen to settle in if we had been alive in the Stone Age.
English
In English this term, we will be finishing reading ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. Year 3 have loved this story so far and can’t wait to see what happens to the Iron Man at the end of the story. We will then be learning more about the Stone Age by exploring a non-fiction text ‘Skara Brae’ by Dawn Finch.
In our writing lessons, we will revisit writing to inform by creating a set of instructions based on ‘How to look after a pet mammoth’. We will then explore how to write a newspaper report and will create one based on the discovery of the Stone Age remains at Skara Brae.
Maths
We will begin by continuing our unit on money where we are revisiting the formal methods of addition and subtraction using £ and p. We will then move onto exploring fractions where we will learn how to read and write fractions (including tenths) and how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator.
Science
In Science, we are continuing to find out about our main organs and the important role played by our skeletons. We will also learn about our muscles and how our skeletons change as we grow older.
RE
Our RE Unit for this term is ‘Salvation’. We will be exploring the different events in the Easter story and learning about how Christians celebrate Easter. Our value this term: Justice.

Term Three Tuesday 3rd January– Friday 10th February 2023
Spelling List —>Spellings Term 3 Weeks 15-20
This term our enquiry will be ‘How did people start to settle?’
We will begin by exploring settlements within our local area and looking for geographical reasons why people may have chosen to settle here in the past. As historians, we will then explore the Stone Age and find out what evidence we can use to tell us how people lived in this period. We will discover what life was like before people chose to settle in one area before moving onto exploring the features of a Stone Age settlement.
English
In English this term, we will be reading our anchor text ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. This is a classic and much-loved story which merges the genres of science fiction and fairy tales. We will be continuing to develop our retrieval and inference skills as well as exploring new vocabulary such as cogs, axel and furnace.
In our writing lessons, we will be learning the tale ‘The Stone Trolls’ by Dean Thompson and using it as a basis to create our own stories. We will be revisiting how to use expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbials and prepositions within our writing. Towards the end of term, we will also be exploring poetry by reading ‘The Journey Through the Stone Age’ and using it to innovate our own poems about the past.
Maths
We will begin by continuing our unit on multiplication and division, in particular exploring more formal written methods for both operations. We will also continue developing our recall of key multiplication facts by learning the 3, 4 and 8 times tables. We will then move onto exploring money and will recap how to use formal methods to add and subtract, this time in the context of £ and p.
Science
In Science this term we will be learning about bones and how to be healthy. We will begin by looking at food groups and the nutritional values of different foods. We will use this knowledge to design a healthy meal. Then we will move on to exploring the human skeleton and the role it plays within the human body. As scientists, we will learn how to ask scientific questions.
RE
Our RE Unit for this term is ‘Why do religious books and teachings matter?’. We will be exploring different religious writings and how believers take meaning from them, as well as looking at how we can express our own beliefs. We will look at how religious communities treat their religious texts and how they draw meaning from them. Finally, we will also explore how moral messages can be delivered through stories and how people can express their religious beliefs through their own stories. Our value this term: Perseverance.
PE
This term we will develop our dynamic balance and coordination skills. We will also be developing the cognitive cog – identifying areas for improvement in our work and being able to say what we are doing well.
PSHE
Our Jigsaw unit this term is ‘Dreams and Goals’. These sessions will allow the children to reflect on and express their dreams and ambitions. We will learn how to stay motivated and persevere when working towards our goals as well as how to overcome any obstacles. Finally, we will share our successes and celebrate what we have already achieved.
Term Two Monday 31st October– Friday 16th December

This term we will continue our enquiry will be ‘How has electricity change and improved out lives?’
As we begin term 2, we will further explore where electricity comes from with a special visit from the National Grid – we will look at the creation of T-Pylons and where they are being built near us. As we begin to explore light we will discuss What is light? and Where does like come from? After we have learnt about different types of light and its sources we will begin to explore shadows. As further scientists we will discuss, ‘What is a magnetic force?’ We will put our scientific skills to the test as we explore magnets within our everyday lives and the significant impact these have. As artists, we will study the work of Andy Warhol and the great creation of Pop Art. We will be learning to identify warm and cold colours and how to create our very own paint palette. As designers, we will learn how to construct, power and create our very own door bell.
English
In English this term, we will be reading our anchor text ‘Ice Palace’ by Robert Swindells. We will be continuing to develop our reading skills by retrieving information, inferring the text and exploring new vocabulary such as avalanche, snow drift and chasm. In our writing lesson, we will be learning our scientific understanding of light and electricity to compose our very own encyclopaedia. We will be revisiting the features of a non-fiction text whilst learning to use subordinating conjunctions, bullet points, diagrams and captions. Towards the end of term, we will be exploring the poem ‘Dark’ By James Carter identifying different poetic features, techniques and further developing our speaking and performance skills.
Maths
This term we will begin with a focus on addition and subtraction. We will practice adding and subtracting up to three digit numbers and learn how to exchange. We will then move onto multiplication and division with our arithmetic focus on statistics. Throughout the term, there is an expectation that children will be practicing their times tables and division at home and that all children will be fluent in times tables and division facts.
RE
Our second unit – ‘What is the Trinity?’ allows us to build upon our previous knowledge that the Trinity is God, Jesus and The Holy Spirit as one being. During this unit, we will identify the difference between a ‘Gospel’, which tells us the story of the life and teaching or Jesus, and a letter. We will be able to explain, in our own words, what a baptism is and what the Trinity means. We will be able to describe how Christians show their belief in the Trinity through the way they live their lives. Finally, we will be able to make links between texts from the Bible and the idea of God in Christianity.
PE
We will be continuing to develop our core aquatic skills during our swimming sessions as well as our fundamental movement skills. During our school PE lesson, Our FUNs skills this term are jumping and landing coordination a where we will begin to further develop our agility and core strength. We are developing the multi ability social cog – learning to work collaboratively with others, give valuable feedback and positive praise.
PSHE
Our term one Jigsaw unit is ‘Celebrating Difference’. These sessions will allow the children to learn and reflect on their place in both our community and the wider world. We will recognise that everyone is individual and important. We will look at different family units, bullying, using kind and unkind words and giving compliments.
Term One Monday 5th September – Thursday 15th October

This term our enquiry will be ‘How has electricity change and improved out lives?’
We will be exploring where electricity comes from and its journey to our homes and discovering how electricity has changed our lives and how we can used it safely. We will be learning how to construct a simple series electric circuit using switches, buzzers, bulbs and batteries. Do you know the difference between a battery and a cell? By working scientifically, we will be investigating conductors and insulators and bulb brightness. Lastly, we will be learning how light travels and understanding that dark is the absence of light. Using this knowledge, we will be exploring the dangers of light, reflective materials and how shadows are formed. As designers, we will be applying this knowledge whilst exploring how shadows are formed and changed.
English
In English this term, we will be reading ‘Too Small Tola’ by by Atinuke. This book includes three charming stories about a young girl who lives in a flat in Lagos, Nigeria. We will be learning to explore different cultures, compare lifestyles and reflect on how life is different around the world. We will be continuing to develop our retrieval and inference skills and upskilling our sequencing and order to ensure we are able to closely refer to the text.
During our writing sessions, we will be exploring the Pie Corbett text ‘The Nightmare man’. We will be learning to write a suspense story using techniques such as show not tell, ellipses and dramatic connectives. Later on during the term , we will be learning how to write a set of detailed instructions based on ‘How to construct an electric circuit’
Maths
This term will focus on place value. We will revisit and consolidate our understanding of place value up to and including three digit numbers. We will be learning to count in hundreds and manipulate three digit numbers to secure our understanding. In addition to our daily lessons, there will be weekly arithmetic practice and an expectation that all children are fluent in their times table and division facts by the end of the year.
Science and Art
We will put our scientific skills to the test as we explore magnets within our everyday lives and the significant impact these have. We will explore new concepts such as friction. As artists, we will study the
work of Andy Warhol and the great creation of Pop Art. We will be learning to identify warm and cold colours and how to create our very own paint palette.
RE
Our first unit – ‘What is if like to follow God?’ asks us to think about the significance of God’s messages, his behaviour and lessons learnt through the teachings of the bible. We will begin to understand the importance of a covenant and the impact is has upon others. We will study the story of Noah and the Ark and explore the relationship between promises and actions. In reflection, we will consider the positive benefits of having a healthy relationship with God and how the teachings of God may make a difference to our lives today. PSHE
Our term one Jigsaw unit is ‘Being Me in My World’. These sessions will allow the children to learn and reflect on their place in both our community and the wider world. We will start by setting our whole school and class expectations before thinking about goals for the year ahead.
PE
In PE this term, we will be developing our core aquatic skills and fundamental movement skills. During our school PE lesson, Our FUNs skills this term are footwork coordination and static one leg balance where we will begin to further develop our agility and core strength.
