Term 5 Overview of Learning
What will we see when we explore the world?
Following on from the previous learning enquiries that focus on the local area, children will explore the wider world and deepen their geographical knowledge of the world’s continents and oceans. Children will investigate what it is like in hot and cold countries with a focus on the Polar regions and countries near the equator. Children will compare the human and physical features of these areas with their locality. Children will have the opportunity to study Kenya and understand the diverse nature of the country. They will study a Kenyan village in detail comparing life there to their own. Artwork and Music will link to this along with stories like Lilah the Secret of rain. Children will learn how exploring the world has changed by studying explorers from the past and from modern times. They will learn about significant events in exploration like the discovery of the Americas and the moon landing to help them understand how and where people explore and how these events made an impact.
Maths
In maths this term we start with our Measurement unit, looking at time to begin with. Children will need to know o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to and finally 5 past and to the next hour. Then we move on to length and height and understanding cm and m. After that, we will look at position and direction. The children will learn and understand left, right, anti-clockwise and clockwise and quarter and half turns. Finally, we will be concentrating on mass, looking at grams (g) and kilograms (kg).
English writing
This term we will start with the book ‘The Greatest Explorer’ by Chris Judge. We will be covering the following: object, verb and nouns to build a simple sentence, compound sentences, coordinating conjunctions, expanded noun phrases, subordinating conjunctions, synonyms and fronted adverbials, which will allow the children to write their own versions of the story and allow their imaginations and ideas to come alive.
English Reading
We will be having two guided reading lessons a week again in term 5. One lesson will be focussed on non-fiction texts on famous explorers such as Robert Scott, Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong and the other lesson will be in small groups, focussing on a different book, linked to your child’s reading level, working on reading fluency and comprehension skills. We will also be continuing to read high quality texts at the end of the day with rich vocabulary as a whole class.
R.E
Our question this term is ‘How do we celebrate the Journey through Life?’ We will be looking at what it means to take a journey, the important events through life for Christians and for members of other religions and cultures.
Our value this term is Service.
P.E
We will be learning to develop our sending and receiving skills so that we can apply them in our cricket lessons. We will also be taking part in the school triathlon events planned for this term.
Computing
In computing we will use stop motion animation techniques and features to create our own short animation. We will learn that we need a sequence of images to create an animation and that it is important to make small changes to create a smooth sequence.
Music
In music we will be learning a traditional call and response song from Ghana. This will include recognising and discussing the tempo, dynamics and timbre of the music then composing our own call and response songs.
We will also begin learning our songs for the ‘Summer Sing’ festival taking place in July.
PSHE
This term’s unit looks at our relationships within our family and with our friends and acquaintances and how these can look different for each of us. These lessons also help us deal with conflict and find resolutions.

Term 4 – Monday 20th February – Friday 31st March
This term we will continue with our question – What difference did Brunel make to Bristol?
We will be learning more about Brunel’s important designs and their impact. We will also have the opportunity to learn about other important historical figures such as Henry Ford and Katherine Johnson. We will look at how these people have made a difference and we will also get an opportunity to develop our design technology skills creating our own mechanical toy!
Science
In term 4 we will continue to investigate materials. We will learn about recycling and also the invention of new materials. We will then have a go at developing a new material.
Maths
We start term 4 by looking at shape. We will revise the names of shapes and we will investigate the properties of both 2d and 3d shapes. We will practise drawing shapes, sorting shapes, recognising symmetry and making patterns. We will be introduced to the vocabulary of sides, vertices and faces.
We will then spend some time learning about fractions. We will start by making equal parts before moving on to recognising a half, a quarter and a third. We will look at unit and non unit fractions and we will find equivalent fractions.
At the end of the term we will learn about time. We will practise telling the time to the hour and half past the hour then we will progress to quarter past and quarter to. We can then begin to learn about 5 minute intervals and understanding hours and minutes. This will then help us to do some problem solving!
English writing
We are reading a new exciting, descriptive text this term called ‘Elf Road’. We will look at how the author uses language in the text and we will use it to develop our own wonderful descriptive piece of writing. We will also get the chance to write a recount following our school trip to the SS Great Britain!
English reading
We have been really enjoying our ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ text in term 3 and we will be continuing with this in term 4. We have had so much fun investigating the different characters and can’t wait to find out what happens next!
We will also continue with our weekly guided reading lesson working in small groups to develop fluency and comprehension and we also love our daily story and our DEAR (Drop everything and read) time after lunch each day.
RE
We will continue to learn about why stories are special in different religions before beginning to learn about Easter.
Our value this term is Justice.
PSHE
This term we are learning about ‘Healthy Me’. This will include exploring the ways we can make healthy choices, how we can be calm and relaxed and understanding medicine. We will learn about a balanced diet using the eatwell plate and look at the links between nutrition and energy.
PE
This term we will be learning dodging skills and also some co-ordination and ball skills.
PE will continue to be on a Tuesday and Thursday. Please wear PE kist to school on these days.
Music
This term our theme is ‘On this Island – British songs and sounds.’ We will look at British seaside, countryside and city sounds aswell as learning some British folk songs. We will compose music using the different sounds we create throughout the term. We will also begin learning songs for the Summer Sing event which takes place in July.

Term 3 – Tuesday 3rd January – Friday 10th February
What difference did Brunel make to Bristol?
In Term 3 we will investigating what makes an engineer. We will use our learning in DT to consider what makes a bridge strong and to develop our own bridge designs. We will then experiment by using different materials and resources to build our own bridges.
In history we will learn about Mary Anning and her fascinating discoveries of fossils and in art we will get the chance to use found resources to create fossils.
We will then spend some time learning about Brunel’s amazing achievements and the impacts these have had locally. We will use this learning in art where we will create drawings of Brunel’s structures inspired by the local artist Emily Ketteringham.
What a busy term!
Science
This term in science we are learning about materials. We will be investigating the properties of different materials, deciding on the most suitable material for a purpose and using the best material to create packaging.
Maths
In Term 3 we will begin with multiplication and division. We will start by understanding what makes a group equal or unequal. We can then move on to using repeated addition before using the multiplication symbol. We will use arrays to represent multiplication sums then we will learn our 2x tables. Don’t forget to use TTRockstars to practise these!
At the end of the term we will be learning about statistics. We will be creating and interpreting tally charts, pictograms and block graphs and will have lots of fun collecting our own data to use too.
English Writing
We are going to start the term by learning about some unusual creatures…the ‘classroom goblins’! We will use an information text to learn all about where they hide, what they eat and how they have fun. Then we will have a go at creating our own information text about classroom goblins using our imaginations. Once we are experts on how to write an information text, we can use our learning to write all about Brunel!
Later in the term we will be exploring poetry using the poem ‘Where do you get your ideas from?’. We will use this poem to generate our own powerful verbs, WOW words and to experiment with rhyme. We can then use our own super poems to practise reading aloud with confidence and expression.
English Reading
We are going to have lots of fun this term using the Roald Dahl text ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. We will make predictions about the story, discuss the sequence of events and also make inferences from what we have read together. We will explore the vocabulary used in the text and will consider the characters’ thoughts and feelings.
We will also have a guided reading session each week where we will work in small groups using texts suitable for our current reading level to focus on both fluency and comprehension.
We will also continue to enjoy our daily story time at the end of each day and our DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time after lunch each day.
RE
In RE we will be looking at Bible stories and why they are special. We will also learn about the Torah and the Qur’an as we discuss the messages and meanings behind each story.
Our value this term is Perseverance.
PSHE
This term we are learning about ‘Dreams and Goals’. We are going to work together to achieve a challenge or goal, then use team work and our imaginations to create an imaginary ‘dream bird’.
PE
PE in Term 3 will take place on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Please wear PE kits to school on these days. PE kits should be black shorts, trousers or skorts, a white St Anne’s logo t-shirt or plain white t-shirt and black or white trainers. In Term 3 we will be practising different types of balance and also learning about dance.
Music
In Term 3 we will practise representing known sounds with a variety of instruments. We will learn about the vocabulary ‘dynamics’ and ‘timbre’. We will also use musical notation to play melodies and to write our own melodies. We then hope to create our own composition in groups which we will perform to others.

Term 2 Overview of Learning

What makes a habitat successful?
Science
We will be asking ‘Who eats who?’ and ‘How do you keep healthy?’ We will be finding out about the basic needs of animals, including humans, for survival. We will also be finding out how plants and animals depend on one another by looking at food chains and where our energy comes from? We will be looking at why it is important to exercise, which foods are better for you to eat, why good hygiene is important and hopefully we will be having a visit from a nurse. We will also be designing a meal for the school kitchen to prepare.
Maths
In our maths lessons we will start by continuing our addition and subtraction unit, including using the column method with exchanging (where there are more than 9 ones when adding and where there are not enough ones when subtracting) and worded problems. We then move onto our Money unit. We start the unit by recognising coins then moving onto notes. The children will need to make different amounts using coins and notes, compare money and finally, calculate change. Later in the term we will introduce the children to multiplication which we will continue into term 3.
English Writing
In English this term we start by looking at an instructional text ‘ How to build a bug hotel’ The children will begin by looking at features of instructions and instruction writing . We will be covering the following: verbs, adverbs, imperative verbs, coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions, and fronted time adverbials, which will allow the children to write their own set of instructions. We then move on to look at poetry writing, using the poem ‘The owl and the Pussycat’ by Edward Lear. We will be looking at rhyming words and features of poetry. The children will finish the unit with an innovated poem of their own. Finally, we will be imitating the nativity story, where the children will use their R.E knowledge of the story of Jesus’ birth through re writing the story, focusing on using conjunctions, questions and adjectives.

Term 1 Overview of Learning
What makes a habitat successful?
Our enquiry question this term is ‘What makes a habitat successful?’ In term 1, we will be answering the question, ‘what does it mean to be alive?’ through growing our own plants and understanding what living things need to survive. Our second question ‘What is a home?’ looks at different habitats around the world and how plants and animals adapt to survive in their environment. The children will also have the opportunity to use their creative imaginations to design an animal using their knowledge on habitats and adaptations. We will also compare geographical similarities and differences between Weston-super-Mare and a small area of Kenya.
Maths
In our maths lessons we will be starting Term 1 looking at place value, specifically how many tens and ones a number has (i.e the number 28 has 2 tens and 8 ones), 1 more and 1 less than a given number, before moving onto 10 more and 10 less and different ways to represent a number. Later in the term we then look at partitioning numbers in different ways, so the children have a deeper understanding of what a 2 digit number is made up of. We then move onto comparing 2 digit numbers, discussing and comparing numbers using mathematical language such as more than, less than and equal to.
English Writing
In English this term we begin with the unit ‘Alfie’s star’ which is a unit of writing to entertain. The children will have the opportunity to use their learnt skills to write to entertain to then write their own versions of a story where they can immerse themselves in their own imaginative writing.
We then move onto looking at an instructional text ‘ How to build a bug hotel’ The children will begin by looking at features of instructions and instruction writing . One lesson will be focussed on the book ‘The snail and the whale’ by Julia Donaldson and the other lesson will be in small groups, focussing on a different book, linked to your child’s reading level, working on reading fluency and comprehension skills. We will also be reading ‘The Firework makers daughter’ by Philip Pullman daily as a whole class to expose the children to a high quality text with rich vocabulary.
R.E
In R.E we discuss what it means to belong, through discussions about groups, clubs, families and religions and how these are important in our everyday lives.

Our science topic for these next two terms will be ‘Animals, including humans’ and ‘ living things and their habitats’. We will be answering our learning enquiry questions through our science knowledge and skills,
