Year 1 @West Wick

Term 6

Week 2

This week we have been improving our multiplication skills. The children have been using different strategies to find out the answer. They have been  using objects, drawing arrays and counting in twos, fives and tens to add up groups of.  We have started reading a new book called ‘Lila and the secret of rain’. The children wrote questions that  we could ask to find out more about the book. We punctuated our questions with question marks. We have also been learning how to use noun phrases by putting the adjective before the noun.  During R.E the children have been looking at the Bible story ‘Jonah and the Whale’. The children have been thinking carefully about how  God and Jonah may have been feeling at different parts of the story.

Week 1

Welcome back!  We do hope you all enjoyed the break. It was fantastic to have the Year One Crew back together for term 6 with lovely smiles on their faces and keen to learn.

This week the Year one @ West Wick, along with the Busy Bees, have been getting ready to entertain some very special visitors to help celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. They have learnt a medley of hymns, written prayers about the Queen and have made paper chains and union jacks to decorate the school hall ready for 90 year old visitors who live in our community. They came along to school today, with the support of Take 5 and had tea and cake and listened to the singing. The children were amazing and everyone had a fantastic time. Indeed, the children were so proud of themselves that they wanted to know if their own families could come and watch them so if you are able to come along on Monday 13th June at 2 o’clock we would be delighted to sing for you!

Week 1

What a fantastic first week back the Year One Crew have had. We started our new topic ‘How does your garden grow?’ and have opened up the St Anne’s garden centre. The children have been busy writing shopping list, buying items with money as well as serving each other in the garden centre café. The school has been brightened up by all the stunning decorated pots that the children have brought in from home. Thank you so much!



Sunflower seeds have been planted and watered. After that the crew wrote instructions on how to plant a sunflower. To be successful we needed to include bossy verbs and challenged ourselves to also use time connectives and conjunctions. If you ever need instructions for how to plant a sunflower please come in and read them.



The year one crew have also planted a bean in a zip lock bag. We are going to observe them over time and follow the changes by writing and drawing in our bean diary.



‘Stand this side if you think a plant is alive’. We discussed our best thinking and were able to articulate our reasons for choosing what side to stand on. We then found out using the internet to research.


In math we  have been counting on and back from and to different numbers.

“78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 83, 82, 81, 80, 79, 78”

Putting numbers in order and explaining using our knowledge of tens and units why a number would come first. We have also completed a 100 square puzzle.

Week 5

What a lovely time the we have had learning  the Easter story.

Having spent a lot of time getting to know the story, looking at different versions and practicing the skills we need to write a story, the children have written the story of Hansel and Gretel in their own words. Please come in and read them they are fantastic.

Week 4

What a sporty crew today joining in for Sports Relief. We starting our day with a tag rugby coach helping us learn some new skills. In the afternoon the whole school came together to take part in lots active fun.

Week 3

This week we have been immersing ourselves in the story of Hansel and Gretel. We have been embedding our knowledge of the story through discussion, role-play, puppets and story mapping. We have written some super sentences including adjectives to describe the witch and have been challenging ourselves to include similes too!

We have been thinking about how fortunate we are and have written thank you prayers to God. A lot of us were thankful for our Mums, Dads, families, friends, our school and the people  who help us.

Week 2

After reading ‘A Diary of a Wombat’ last week, we decided that we would write our own diary of an animal. On Monday we researched either a grey squirrel, a fox or a badger. We found out about the habitat, diet and predators of our animal. We collected our information in to an animal fact file. On Tuesday we used our research to help us to write our own diary in the voice of our chosen animal.

Monday -I sniffed out a burger for tea. Next I had a rabbit for desert. Later on I went back to my den to sleep. Then I went to find food it was a spider. Tuesday I slept in my burrow. When I woke up I saw a human and I felt scared and ran away.

World Maths Day

Well done everyone for taking part in our World Maths Day challenge. The year 1 crew are great mathematicians! We spent the day doing lots of maths challenges linking to the number 1 because we are year 1 crew.

World Book Day

It was lovely to see all the children dressed up as their favourite book character. They really did all look amazing! The children shared their books with each other and then wrote a book review. Later on the children asked each other questions and answered as the character they were pretending to be.









Mr Bump

In the afternoon we looked at a story from one of the greatest books – The Bible.

We learnt the parable of the two builders- the wise man who built his house upon the rock and the foolish man who built his house upon the sand.  God wants us to build our life on the rock. We discussed that if we build our life on Jesus and the teachings of the bible  then we will be building our life on good foundations. God holds us up so we will not fall down.

Week 1

This week we have been reading ‘The Diary of a Wombat’ the children found it funny that Mothball the wombat demanded carrots and thinks that humans are easily trained.

We have been using the book to support us in our learning  to use capital letters at the start of our sentences, for names of people and for the days of the week.

We thought about possible questions to ask Mothball. We challenged ourselves to use different question starters: who, where, when, how, what and why.  After that we took it in turns to be in character and answer the questions.  We wrote our questions down and punctuated with a question mark.

Later in the week we carefully looked at the illustrations in the story book. We then wrote in the voice of Mothball and learnt ways in which we may use a exclamation mark. The children came up with lots of fantastic sentences.

In maths this week we have been finding half, quarter and three quarters of shapes and the corresponding symbols. 

We watched a silent film about two brothers who had to build a bridge to be able to continue on their journey. We observed carefully for the different materials they used and discussed why each material may have been selected.

On Friday afternoon the children had a go at building bridges themselves. They could choose from stones, straws, string and lolly pop sticks. The challenge was to get our bridge to go over a gap from one table to another. The children came up with some creative ideas and then worked in their teams to make their bridge even stronger. Some of the bridges were strong enough to take the weight of a pebble. Well done year 1 crew.


Term 2

Week 4

This week we have started reading the book ‘Beegu’. The Year 1 Crew have been thinking about how Beegu may have been feeling at different parts of the story and why. We then recorded our ideas by writing them down.

The children then did some role play to retell the story. We are actors in the Year 1 Crew and we did great.

In maths we have been learning to subtract. Later in the week we  used our subtraction skills to go on a hunt for pictures . First the children had to work out the answer to the take away sum, then find the number that was hiding in the school somewhere and then write down the matching picture. The children found Christopher Columbus, Neil Armstrong, Elsa and Batman.

Week 2

The Year 1 Crew have had a fantastic time making props to make a film of the first moon walk.


The space helmets had some very realistic features.

The Year 1 Crew have made biscuits for the man on the moon to say thank you for doing such a great job. We had to weigh out the ingredients carefully. 

During this week it was remembrance day. The children had a special worship learning about why some people wear a poppy. The children then wrote sentences to answer the question: Why do we wear a poppy?

Week 1

The Year 1 Crew have been adding this week using objects and pictures. We have been learning to add using count  on, putting the biggest number in your head first. We also have been using a number line and jumping Freddie Frog along to help us add. We know that Freddie Frog never jumps on the spot he always moves forward when adding.

Bonfire night safety

The children made some sparkling glittering firework pictures and we managed to spread the glitter around the whole school!

We discussed how to keep safe around bonfires and fireworks and then designed  safety posters using bossy verbs.

After learning about Christopher Columbus last term we are now moving on to learn about our next explorer Neil Armstrong.  At the end of this term when we have found out more information, we will decide who was the best explorer.

Term 1

Week 7

This week in maths the children have been identifying odd and even numbers. We split into two groups. The boys were in team even and the girls were in team odd. The children came up with a move and then did it an odd or even amount of times. After the groups performed their number routines to each other.


Team even decided on 2 jumps, 10 stomp on the spots, 8 star jumps and 6 claps. We had to concentrate to do the right amount.

In literacy we have started a new book called Emily Brown and the Thing. The children had a go at predicting what the character Thing might look like. They drew their idea down and then labelled with describing words. The children then went on to write their prediction in sentences that included their describing words. The children had great predictions, what an imaginative year 1 crew!

The year 1 crew  enjoy learning with the Busy Bees. This week we were pleased that they joined us in yoga.




Week 6

This week the children have been authors and written the return voyage of the Owl and the Pussycat. First they planned what they wanted to include and then used their plan to write up their return story. 

Week 5

In maths this week, the children have been exploring number bonds to 10.  Then they challenged themselves to investigate number bonds to 20.

Rosie brought her new rabbit to meet the Year 1 Crew. The children really enjoyed meeting him.

Week 4

As a crew, we are recalling the story of the Owl and the Pussycat. We know that on their journey, the Owl and Pussycat took some honey and plenty of money all wrapped up in a five pound note. In groups the children shared ideas of what they would take with them if they were going on a journey. Each group then debated what items to take with them. The rule was that each group could only take three items. The children did a fantastic job of justifying their reasons for wanting an item, and were able to successfully have counter-arguments for the other  ideas.

The ‘Master Minds’ group decided on…

1-Food and water. 2- A life jacket. 3- A parrot.

We are very pleased our new class camera has arrived. Korben helped set it up and took a selfie.

Week 3

Our learning theme, Who is the greatest explorer? has set sail learning about Christopher Columbus. The children have been finding out facts about him including where he went and why.

In literacy we have been immersing ourselves in the text of The Owl and the Pussycat. As a crew the children have made up actions for each part of the story, then  worked in groups to act out the story by taking on the role of one of the characters. This was great fun!

Weeks 1 and 2


The year 1 crew have had a great start to the year thinking about some of our school values. We have been expressing our ideas in the form of poetry.

The children have discussed how wonderful it is to be in a class community and how we can learn from and support each other.

We have also been thinking about what it means to be a good friend and discussed that when friends work together it is great!

The children  all wrote a line of a friendship poem. ….

Friends go together like potatoes and numbers -Riley. Riley then explained that he really liked eating potatoes and  really enjoys maths, so potatoes shaped as numbers were much better.
